Larry Marcum Update

Monday 6 April 2020 - Update as of Sunday night the 5th – Day 16

Below is the most complete update I can give and it comes from Larry’s daughter a few days ago.  Things are pretty much the same. It has been a roller coaster ride.  Anyone who knows Larry knows he is a fighter.

From Larry’s daughter on Friday, April 3, 2020

Day 14:  It’s been 2 weeks since my dad’s accident. He remains in the Trauma ICU at Vanderbilt, with still no visitors allowed.  He is still on the ventilator and yesterday evening he was actually sitting up watching the evening news and communicating, non-verbally, with a hand shake to the nurse and some thumbs-up gestures.  It sounded like he had a really good day.  We were so encouraged to hear this.  We were also told he has a blood clot in his neck, where his central line IV had been placed.  This an extremely unfortunate and serious complication added to his already long list of injuries. In order to treat this, he needs to be on a blood thinner.  The first one they tried caused his internal bleeding to start again.  They stopped the medication and had to give him 2 more units of blood.  The have switched to a different medication and will watch him closely.  Please keep your continued prayers coming.  Pray that his bleeding stops, the blood clot doesn’t move and dissolves, and that his pneumonia clears up.  He’s fighting so hard.  We just have to get past the speed bumps in the road.

Last night, Sunday the 5th, Larry’s wife said the clot is still there and his vital signs are stable.  She appreciates the thoughts and prayers.  Her daughter, son-in-law and grand children are taking good care of her.

Talked to Larry's wife last night and he is slowly, slowly improving.  Keeps pulling his tubes out.  Today is 3 weeks in ICU Trauma Unit - wow!

Jim,

Here’s what Larry’s daughter Micah posted to Facebook yesterday:

Day 25: Sunday, my dad was moved out of the Trauma ICU and into a private room. Since then, he has gradually declined each day, mainly with his lung capacity. Today the team decided to do a CT scan, with contrast, of his chest and also an ultrasound. They found there is still blood in his chest cavity. Some is old blood but, there also still seems to be some active bleeding. They put the chest tube back in to drain the blood and relieve the pressure around his lungs so that he can get his lungs expanding better by taking the deep breaths. They started him on another round of antibiotics that are specific to the type of pneumonia he has, based on the culture that was tested. Prior to today, he had still been up walking and eating and working his hardest to get out of there. We know this is going to be a slow healing process but, these set backs are discouraging. Please continue to keep him in your prayers that his lungs will heal, his bleeding will resolve and that his spirits stay up. Thank you all so much.

Thank you for the update. Sorry Larry is having such difficulty. I know it must be very hard on his family as well, not being able to see him. We will keep him in our prayers.

Thanks for the latest on Larry, continued prayers for him and his family.

For a guy that was born with a smile on his face, it's been difficult to imagine just what he has been going through.  It puts a new light on our little stay-at-home inconvenience.  Thanks so much for the update Doug.
