Larry Marcum Update

Larry Marcum Update:

Many of you have probably heard by now that this past Saturday (March 21, 2020) Larry Marcum was riding with friends, on his 650 GS, went off the road in a curve close to Santa Fe, TN and it appears he hit a tree after going down an embankment.  He was life-flighted to Vanderbilt in serious condition and I am glad to report that as of this morning (Monday) he is doing much better.   Needless to say, Larry is on heavy pain medication at the moment.  Seems Larry broke some ribs, had some internal bleeding and injuries but the major and immediate concerns are much better and he is on a path to recovery.

With the Coronavirus-19 and a "no visitors" policy at the hospital, even his wife and children have not been allowed to see him so they talk to Larry and the medical staff over the phone.  Pat is giving me a condition update each day and she is fine and she has no current needs. There are many of us willing to jump in should she require anything and I will ask club members for help if we see there is something we can do.  Pat did say blood donations might be helpful as Larry did use over 5 pints when he first arrived.  Not sure where someone would go to give blood these days.  The Red Cross has been suggested.

Right now is probably not a good time to contact him but sure he would love to hear from his friends a little later.  For the moment, please contact me and I will share with you what I can.

Please keep Larry and his family in your thoughts and prayers

So very sorry to here this, Can Larry get phone calls for well wishers ? Please keep us up to date on his condition or find out if it's acceptable to call him at the hospital since no visitors are allowed in. Larry is such a gentleman and such a wonderful representative of the club. Prayers sent out to him and his loved ones for a speedy recovery.

Thanks, Douglas.  I will keep Larry in my thoughts and prayers.  Having had my recent accident in December, I know the pain and certainly wish him the best.

Oh wow!  This is the first that I heard about the accident.  We peeled off from the group in Waverly.  Yesterday I thought about the group and how the rest of the ride went....little did I know.

Larry:  Take care.  We are praying for a quick and smooth recovery.

Doug: Let me know if I can help in any way.  Pass my greetings on to Larry if he is not getting these messages.  I'll stand by.

Here is a note to all the old folks wanting to donate blood to help Larry.  I went today at 2 PM.  The nurse came to bring me into the bus.  I had brought some extra masks I had at home and she told me they could not use them as it was against their rules.  She then told me there were 10 others in the bus donating at that time.  Im 73.  I went home.   Im going to check out other sites to donate, but i won’t be coming to a bus.  Sitting in a bus with that many strangers, not even wearing masks, seems like a risk.  Guess Im chicken.

Douglas Pittman
Sounds like a good plan to me.  Thanks for the heads up.

I always go to the main donation center on Charlotte.  Less crowded and more space.

I joined the club after the last MOA gathering out in Lebanon. I have yet to engage in any rides, just hasn’t worked with my schedule. I was really wanting to go on the ride last weekend and almost did, but my wife travels for work and we wanted to keep everyone safe. Sorry to hear about Larry and the accident. My prayers are with him and his family.

I was curious, was anyone able to pick up his bike and get it home for him?

Lee Waggoner
Thanks, Douglas,

I’ve been waiting on this report on Larry.

Lee.

Douglas Pittman
You are welcome.  If anyone knows what it is like in a hospital, you do.  My bet is he will be on a bike sooner than later.

Take care,
Douglas

This is a shocker Doug.  I believe that all will agree that Larry is one of the nicest guys around and that he needs to know that we are all pulling for him during this difficult time.  Thanks for letting us know about this and thanks in advance the for the future updates.

Thanks Douglas:  I wish I could give blood but the time I tried to do it, they couldn't get enough out of me and gave up.  Let me know if there is anything else I could do.  Is he alert and talking?  Please keep us up on what you hear about him.

Thanks,
Polly

Will have an update on Larry tomorrow.

Had a couple setbacks.  His wife is worried his recovery is going too slow.

Had a good conversation with Larry's wife this afternoon (4/16/2020) and she says it is the proverbial 2 steps forward and 1 back - but progress is being made.  She worries about Larry all the time and not being able to see him, only have short conversations and limited information from the medical staff makes it all the more challenging.   Larry is a fighter, strong and will beat this.

One of the steps backwards was more bleeding in his chest that required another drain tube.

Larry's wife Pat and the family are grateful for the thoughts and prayers.

Thank you for the information, prayers sent out to him and his family.

I had a thought, does Larry's room have a window would it be possible to organize a group of bikes together and do a lineup of members on  their scooters and make an appearance in view of his room in his honor. It may be uplifting to know we're all thinking of him.

Great idea Dave!

No idea what room he is in.  No one in his family has been able to visit him.  He has moved to a stepdown unit somewhere in Vanderbilt.  I will see what I can find out.  Would be something to do at some point in time.  Maybe when he gets into rehab.

I have a friend who did just that while his buddy was in Vandy for Covid-19. Banners and such no motorcycles. I think it is a good idea.

Perhaps a group video recording via ZOOM with positive messages would be another feasible idea.  Zoom could also be used to host Club meetings during these crazy times.

Sending best wishes and prayers to Larry.
