Blood Donations for Larry
Douglas Pittman
Yesterday, there were several inquiries about blood donations for Larry yesterday and a couple of members sent me the information below.   1st is for Red Cross in Hendersonville and below that it is one for Cools Springs in Franklin.  I have not personally tried these but they can be found on the internet and apparently they like to do donations by appointment.

Here is one for Red Cross from a member in Hendersonville area:

Call for an appointment.  This blood drive is located at 131 Indian Lake Rd. Suite 101 Hendersonville, TN. Please remember to bring a picture ID .  Should you have any questions or concerns, please give me a call.  I can be reached at (615) 308-8449.

The American Red Cross now has a severe blood shortage. Blood and platelet donors of all blood types, especially type O, are urged to give now and help ensure blood products are available for patients this spring.  Having a readily available blood supply is critical for patients whose survival depends on transfusions.  Donors of all blood types are urged to give now to help restock the shelves.

Here is the second one for Cool Springs in Franklin/Brentwood area.  Try this link to https://www.redcrossblood.org/give.html/drive-results?order=DATE&range=10&zipSponsor=37027 and times.

Update on blood donations:

I called and talked with Angela Berryman (per Doug's note yesterday) and asked about donating for Larry.  She indicated that the best way to help was to donate and send Larry a card (that Red Cross has for this purpose - ask for one) telling him that you donated blood in his honor.  Because of blood type differences and logistics, it is more difficult to donate directly to a particular person.  Besides, they need a lot of blood being that supplies have dwindled a lot because of the tornado and then the virus shutdowns.

To quell your concerns about going to a donation center where there will be other people....   She described the extra precautions they are taking.... moving beds further apart, screening everyone before they enter the place, not allowing others to accompany you, wiping the beds down between every donor, etc. etc.

To schedule an appointment go to www.redcrossblood.org and search for a blood drive in your area.

Thanks Steve Lissner for your post about donating blood.  You inspired me to just do it!

Thanks to everyone donating in honor of Larry!

I work at a hospital transfusion service and calling the status of the current blood supply "critical" is an understatement.  Although non-essential and elective surgeries are cancelled until further notice, cancer patients and birthing mothers and accidents like Larry's don't abide by shut down mandates.  The need is definitely there and all the donation cancellations have made a huge impact on how we have to plan patient care.

If you are well and able, please donate.

Speedy recovery, Larry!

Randi,

Sounds like another way to honor Larry would be to sponsor a blood drive.  Is there a way we could do that?

If you were in Kentucky, I’d have answers for you at the ready. The Kentucky Blood Center is great about setting up that kind of thing. The Red Cross, in general, is a bit more... rigid. They’d probably just refer you to the donation centers or prescheduled drives. I can definitely reach out and see if they take on that kind of thing. Regardless, this could be a fantastic club function/event. I know some riders give blood as a sort of karmic offering. And, it’s a good excuse to eat well post donation!
